Resource Stock MillionaireNiche: Financial

Client asked me to help them with a newsletter service suffering from declining readership. We batted around some ideas but came to the conclusion the name was hurting the service. So, I looked at what was hot in a long-term trend that we could write about for at least a couple years.

The answer was resource stocks. We renamed the letter and launched the letter you see here. It went out and became the best selling promotion of the year at that time.

This promotion was successful because it played on the fact that gold was hot. And gold stocks offered the promise of even more upside return. What put this over the top is combining the idea of dividends to the gold stock. This implies safety and more earnings to the reader.

selling a bracket at $10 to selling a Turning a good ad into a great ad…

I created several ads to launch a new product for my client. Sales were going well and they were happy. As sales picked up, comments and questions from customers began to come in. After reading through some of them and talking again with the inventor I came up with the new and improved ad seen here. This ad went from selling a bracket at $10 to selling a “system” for $40. The system is simply 4 brackets. It worked. Sales shot up as the average order size increased.

This promotion  pulled in thousands of new subscribers for the client and continues to run between newer promotions to alleviate fatigue of newer promotions. It’s also a very easy editorial tie in whenever a food shortage story appears in the news. The idea for this came from a one page article in Fast Company about a new generation of farm equipment. From there, I backed into the food crisis and found a compelling quote that became the headline for the promotion.

This promotion started from a picture found by a colleague. The picture – buried on a page in the middle of  an annual report – was of two guys who worked in the field on natural gas wells. The caption read “World Record Discovery” We ran with it, pitched it to the editor and the editor flew down to investigate. His first email after he arrived set the tone for a  perfect “J. Peterman” style story lead.

The promo pulled in several thousand subscribers before it was pulled because the pick eventually went against us.
