CHARACTER = WISDOM + CHOICE over TEMPTATION

Would it be useful to see a new perspective on why temptation shows up in our lives?

Can you see the value in finally seeing temptation as a good opportunity instead of some kind of “punishment” for not being a good enough person?

What if I told you that to develop character we simply MUST be tempted to do the opposite of that which builds character?

You see, Champion, I’ve come to believe that to develop character we MUST be tempted to do the opposite of that which builds character. You don’t build muscle by Sean McCool Fitnessgoing to the gym and lifting air. You lift weights. Weights are heavy and yet they make us stronger.

It occurs to me that temptation is like gravity – it’s everywhere. And we can use that gravity to make us stronger. Weights don’t actually make us stronger – it’s choosing to pick them up in the face of gravity that makes us stronger.

I’d have you consider temptation is like that.

For instance…

If you want to build character in your FITNESS routine, then you’ll need to WISELY CHOOSE to overcome the TEMPTATION to skip working out or to gobble down the Oreo’s.

If you want to build character in your IDENTITY, then you’ll need WISELY CHOOSE to overcome the TEMPTATION to not read, to not pray, to not study, to not be the work.

If you want to build character in your RELATIONSHIPS, then you’ll need to WISELY CHOOSE to overcome the TEMPTATION to skip date night, not make the phone call, not send the text, not take the time to invest in others.

If you want to build character in your ENTERPRISES, then you’ll need to WISELY CHOOSE to overcome the TEMPTATION to take the short-term gain at the expenses of the long-term vision.

In all these examples… in every area of life… it’s the resistance that opens up an opportunity to build character.

The temptation is coming – big or small – it’s coming.

And that’s an incredible opportunity for us if we’re aware and wisely looking for opportunities to choose to overcome it.

Listen, it doesn’t matter how positive you are… or how many books you read… or how much you pray – temptation to be less than you were created to be is coming.

It is relentless.

Temptation will show up in every corner, crack, and crevice of your life.

It is relentless.

Your opportunity with every temptation is to build character.

“CHARACTER = WISDOM + CHOICE over TEMPTATION”

~ Coach Sean McCool

It is relentless.

To build character you need two things – WISDOM and CHOICE.

WISDOM alone is useless if you never CHOOSE to use it.

And CHOICE alone without the backing of WISDOM is a crap shoot.

Only when you combine WISDOM with CHOICE can you consistently and reliably overcome temptation and therefore build character.

Hi Sean…I’ve never thought of temptation as a punishment…I was taught that there are choices in life, and your outcomes depend laegely on the choices you make from moment to moment. I’ve taught my kids that they need to learn what their priorities are, then learn to make as many choicws as they cwn that will get them where they want to go.

Agreed. Temptations are not punishments. They are opportunities for character. I love that you’ve raised your kids with such a powerful set of tools for taking control of their lives.
